Loi Krathong festival – Sukhothai Historical Park
My hostel here was situated right by the historical park in the old part of town. I ventured out to see the festival and it was simply breathtaking! The lights, the fireworks and oh my, the food!! I also got gifted a ring which might mean I’m married to a random thai guy now…. who even knows. Later I met some people in my hostel and we decided to get up in the wee hours of the morning to see the sunrise from one of the many Buddah statues on the hills surrounding the city. Luckily there was another guy in our hostel who had a pick up truck and offered to drive us up. So the next day we met at 5:30am to pile up in the back of said truck and off we went.
Slightly disappointing Sunrise from Wat Saphan Hin – Sukhothai
Unfortunately it was too foggy to really see much but it was worth it if only for the experience of sitting at the back of the truck waving at the locals who goggled and pointed at the group of farangs ( = Thai word for Westerners) clinging on to the sides of the truck for dear life.
Thai Transport
At some point I decided it is time for a real Thai Massage so I answered on of the many calls of “Massaaaaaaa!! Massaaaaaaaaa!!” and entered one of the blissfully air-conditioned establishments. The little Thai woman assigned to me didn’t speak much english but uttered a delighted giggle every time I flinched. A noticeable difference seems to be that, where a massage in western counties is something that is happening to you, Thai massages are a bit more interactive.
So there I was, legs and arms being contorted into seemingly impossible positions. Elbows, feet and knees borrowing into tense muscles for a solid hour! And all of this for a mere 150Bath!!!
